
|  | After founding the town of Durango, Colorado in 1880, the Denver & Rio Grande Railway began construction of a rail line that connected their new community to nearby Silverton.
Designed primarily to haul gold and silver from the San Juan Mountains, it is estimated that more than $300 million in precious metals have traveled the line throughout its history.
